Today, I went to a big job interview. Eventually, the guy subtly enquired about my political beliefs. He seemed pretty laid-back and cool, so I told him, at which point he just chuckled and told me to leave. When I threatened to report him, he just said, "Who're they gonna believe, you or me?" FML

Would you really want to work for someone who cannot accept other peoples beliefs anyway?

Complain anyway. That's just not ******* cool. If he did it to you, he'll have done it to other people.

Part of me says YDI on this one. There are questions that you don't have to answer. When asked a personal question about political beliefs, just answer, "I don't see what relevance that has to this interview. I don't feel comfortable discussing my points of view on politics." And leave it at that. If he presses, clam up and refuse to answer. Your beliefs are none of his business.

Am I the only one who wants to know his political beliefs?

I would have said that since I don't believe in discussing politics or religion in the work place, I would rather not talk about it. If he was cool like he seemed, he would be ok with it. Some ass gnomes like him also appreciate that answer. I have heard of that being asked on interviews before to see if people could be easily prodded into those convos in the workplace. Still not right to have it asked on an interview and still worth reporting.

Report him anyway. You have nothing to lose, and you never know, people might just believe you. In any case, it'll bug him a great deal so win-win!

an empty threat. report him immediately to human rights commission. political views are protected and scum like that should be confronted.

Sue his ass! If you win you might not have to work at all!

I guess whether you "deserved" it or not, kinda depends on what your answer was.

Is it a small business? I think it's a legitimate question if it's only a couple people working there. Too small of a place to be working with people you don't agree with stuff on...but if there's more than a few people, then what the hell?

Politics are fair game, a long as they aren't political topics that touch on another protected topic. You can hire based on libertarian or progressive beliefs, but the interviewer can't ask about sexuality, abortion etc that cross into religion and protected rights. That said, 90% of companies won't care, but some have concerns about political based attacks by employees, leaks of sensitive information and deliberate sabotage to further political causes.
