Today, I went to a job interview. It was my last shot of getting a job before my savings run dry. It all went well until I was asked why I wanted to join the company. I got flustered and stuttered, "Because I um, I like money?" The guy gave me the most insincere "We'll be in touch." ever. FML

Always, always prepare answers for these questions ahead of time. It's a common question to be asked in an interview.

should have taken a breath and gathered your thoughts first.

You know what I think? No company wants to hire a liar or a bullshitter and I'm sure nobody wants a brown-noser either. You told the truth, the truth I'm sure every other interviewee was thinking but didn't say. Is it really about want? No. If you and some other guy work the same job and put in the same amount of effort but he told his interviewer he wanted to work and you told yours you wanted money, there's no real difference. Points for honesty, OP. 10/10

That's just stupid. Everyone wants to make money, that's a given in the first place. The question determines why you think that company is a particular good fit. It shows you actually went through the trouble to prepare your interview. It doesn't matter that the primary reason is money, everyone knows it. It's about the effort and if you can't even bother to prepare then why would they hire you?

for such a common interview question, why weren't you prepared ahead of time? YDI

my second job I had, my boss asked the same question. I told her to build credit. she replied well that's the first time someone your age ever said that. I was 18 at the time. my parents raised my siblings and me to be responsible. I love my parents!

Money pressure sucks so bad. Unfortunately, interviewers get turned off by desperation. Remember that interviewing is all about sales--you are the product. Remember to review the job posting and research the company and think about how your skills and interests match the potential employer.

Always say the simple phrase, "I want to be part of something bigger than myself".

Well buddy. That answer wasn't as bad as you think. When you got the 'we'll let you know' you should have followed up instead of walking away: "Sir, my current situation dictates that earning a paycheck is the priority. I wish I could tell you I am looking for a rewarding career that I could grow in, and someday that will be the case, but right now I'm broke and I need a job. I will be a stellar employee nonetheless, and willing to do all the work your current staff feels is beneath them"

YDI, that is the WORST thing you can say at an interview, it kills any chances you have at getting a job

I hate to be mean but obviously there's a reason you're still unemployed. it sounds like you need to practice your interview skills.
