Honestly, i'm wondering, if she's a psycho as OP says she is, if she coached her kid to say that. Seems a bit random for a 5 year old to something like that.
1. She will never change. She will only get more abusive towards to. that is a FACT. 2. She most probably coached her kid to say that. You were probably showing some signs of self respect so she found a way to put you back under her (back)hand. 3. The kid is 5. when you leave, they'll get over it quickly enough so don't worry about the kid. (unless she is hurting the child, then make a call to the authorities) 4. LEAVE
I understand you don't want to hurt her son however you can force a relationship that you don't want to be in. the sooner you end it the better
It's just another form of abuse. Until you decide to actually sack up, I don't feel bad.
Been there, done that. On the long run it is far worst for the kid if the "parents" are not getting along.
That psycho probably had him do that on purpose so you wouldn't leave her!

If she is abusive towards you, I would have to wonder if her 5 year old is enduring the same thing? If so, I'd say get out of the relationship and look into ways of getting her help.
If you're unhappy, get out the of the situation. Keeping her son happy isn't worth the cost of your happiness
