Today, I went to see the school counselor to schedule my classes for school. She asked me if I knew how to speak English. My parents are Chinese and I don't even know how to speak Chinese. I've lived in America my whole life. Plus, I even spoke to her in English to ask about classes. FML

My boyfriend is Chinese and comes from China. We go to a boarding school in the USA. I don't notice any accent when he speaks English. He does have an accent when he speaks Chinese. He speaks English perfectly fine and if he didn't tell you where he came from, you would assume he was second generation Chinese American.

People can be so ignorant. Sorry op.

Chinese don't speak Chinese, we speak Mandarin. Just like Indians don't speak Indian, they speak Tamil.

Tamil is just one of the many languages Indians can speak. There are different cultural groups in India and they all speak different languages like Telegu, Hindi, Urdu, Gujurati (I think that's how it's spelt) etc. It's kind of ignorant to assume that all Indians speak Tamil. Also, all Chinese people don't speak Mandarin. What about Cantonese?

All Chinese speak Mandarin. Cantonese is a dialect that only some Chinese speak. For example, I speak hokkien and mandarin, but I don't speak cantonese.

Well, I never said that Indians only speak Tamil. I'm just saying that Indians don't speak Indian, like how Chinese don't speak Chinese.

All Chinese people don't speak Mandarin... Yes, it's the most used dialect, but not every Chinese person speaks it. I, for one, can speak Cantonese and Taishanese , but I can't understand Mandarin.

你不普通, cause you don't understand 普通话!

Regardless of what dialect different Chinese speak, we definitely don't speak Chinese. Chinese is a race, not a language!

No, 111. Chinese is not a race. Please clear that up in your own head--it's not.

I feel your pain, OP. I'm half Chinese and when I pronounce a word wrong, people would always comment saying it's because of my Chinese background. The racism in today's society is appalling.

Too bad 'Chinese' isn't a language =

It is. Mandarin, Cantonese, ect. are just dialects of the Chinese language:)

Under a very loose definition of "dialect". The so-called dialects are about as different from each other as Romance languages are from each other.

you should have comeback with a sarcastic remark like "No but my you are very good at Chinese"
