Today, I went to the doctor. For the past year, my stomach would get upset every time I ate. Attempting to ease the pain, I would always eat a piece of bread. My doctor told me I have Celiac disease, which means I'm allergic to gluten. I'm allergic to bread. FML

LaineyLove tells us more.

I'm the one who wrote the FML. I'll clear some things up for those of you who think I deserved it. The FMLs have to be short so I couldn't write the whole story. My main symptoms were severe joint and muscle pain along with cramping and headaches. The stomach pain was constant, not just when I ate bread. I had a hard time even digesting vegetables. I went to doctors practically every week and scoured the internet. I was finally "diagnosed" with fibromyalgia and IBS. My first Celiac blood test came back negative, but finally my gastroenterologist figured it out. I'm now gluten-free, and I'm feeling much better (although hungry). And I'm a pre-med student, so I'm not an idiot. I saw at least 5 different doctors and specialists. I even went to Mayo Clinic. Celiac can be a very difficult diagnosis as the symptoms are often non-specific. Thanks for all the tips on gluten-free food. It's time for me to start cooking!

that does suck. but. didn't the bread just make you feel worse? and if so, why did you keep eating it each time?

Im sorry... I know what that one is like... they thought I had that too. There are plenty of support groups out there, and a lot of alternatives.. keep your head up!!!!

celiacs disease is not actually an allergy... its an intolerance

Wrong. It's an autoimmune disease. The body releases antibodies as a reaction to the gluten which then attacks the gut instead.

#4 you are wrong they spelled it right... and for those who are telling them to stop whining, you DON'T have the disease so therefore you DON'T know how hard it is. When you have to completely change everything you eat, and especially if you go to college... its very very hard. I feel for them I know what is like..

It is Coeliac in UK, I HAVE the disease so I think I do how it is spelled, other places spell it differently. It is not an easy thing to live with, I'm still Ill everyday because of the damage in my gut even though I am strictly gluten free

"It's Coeliac. You could at least learn to spell it since you have it." It's spelled both ways; quit being an arrogant douche and recognize alternate spellings when you see them. "YDI for letting it go on for a year without at least looking your symptoms up online" Yes, because all we need is people self-diagnosing themselves with a brain tumor when they have a headache. If you have a problem, go to a professional, not the Internet.

My mom has had that disease for years. There are plenty of great gluten-free products, like rice pasta, rice/corn flour, rice bread, etc. Every year I bake my mother a gluten-free cake for her birthday. It's not so bad. Plus, rice flour brownies are delicious.

THAT EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!!!!!! it'll suck at first but don't worry life is much better without gluten aaand you lose a ton of weight!

are you sure? well i have had it my whole life (well so does anybody with ceoliac disease) but my parents took me to a lot of doctors and i finaly got diagnosed when i was about 2 or 3. i'm like the skinniest girl in my year (im not annorexic though im just on the line between underweight and healthy) but yeah i guess that oud be true, since most foods containing carbs are from gluten

#4 and #13 it can be spelled either way, depending on the country you live in. I have Celiac too. It is difficult to find foods, because once you have it, you realize that most of the food is not that good. Once you get situated with the disease, you should experiment with recipes, that is what I have done. And I found many recipes that were quite tasty. Also, the store bought breads are not that appetizing.

Anyone who clicks YDI is very inconsiderate. Until you have been diagnosed with something like this you truly do not understand how devastating it can be. I was diganosed a year ago as gluten, soy, dairy and egg intolerant. There are also about 20 foods and 20 spices I can have once every 4 days because I have a slight reaction to them. Finding out you have to eliminate a food is devastating. It will be a hard road, but the good news is that it is so much easier to have gluten-intolerance now than it was 20 years ago. Most restaurants including fast food places like Panera have allergy information if you ask about it, you can find out ANY allergens in their foods. A lot of restaurants now offer gluten free menus (for instance Outback), depending on where you are there are more options. there is a gluten free bakery 3 minutes from my house. Pick up "The Gluten-Free Bible", it is wonderful at helping you learn how to live gluten free, and also dealing with the emotional aspect of it. Gluten is in a ton of things, so you need to get educated fast. I also recommend going to www.ceceliasmarketplace.com, they offer a gluten-free guide for over the counter medicines and foods etc. Also get self-sealing envelopes, the ones you lick are often dusted with gluten, I forgot a few months after being diagnosed, licked one at the ATM and was sick for days. That said, although having celiac's sucks, please be grateful for all the foods you can still eat. It is so much harder when you tack on even more food intolerances.

ok so i have celiac also and this is nottt and FML its not that bad at all. theres a ton of stuff out there its not that big of a deal

it is a big deal because it can destroy ur bowel and lead to cancer

its a problem, but changing to a gluten fre life style isn't such a big deal. i'm ceoliac and its so embarrasing when i have to bring my own food to a party.
