LaineyLove tells us more.
I'm the one who wrote the FML. I'll clear some things up for those of you who think I deserved it. The FMLs have to be short so I couldn't write the whole story. My main symptoms were severe joint and muscle pain along with cramping and headaches. The stomach pain was constant, not just when I ate bread. I had a hard time even digesting vegetables. I went to doctors practically every week and scoured the internet. I was finally "diagnosed" with fibromyalgia and IBS. My first Celiac blood test came back negative, but finally my gastroenterologist figured it out. I'm now gluten-free, and I'm feeling much better (although hungry). And I'm a pre-med student, so I'm not an idiot. I saw at least 5 different doctors and specialists. I even went to Mayo Clinic. Celiac can be a very difficult diagnosis as the symptoms are often non-specific. Thanks for all the tips on gluten-free food. It's time for me to start cooking!

That really sucks. I could never live without bread, it's just so yummy! And it's never lupus.
I have Celiac Disease. Take really good care of it or it will turn into Lactose intolorance. Its a serious shit hole, but you'll get used to it. If you're a very sensitive celiac (like me) cross contamination is a HUGE deal. Whey powder (which is in like, everything) is bad. It's a very serious diagnosis.
also, if you have any lower back issues, the GF diet may clear these things up. A celiac family friend's parents died and it was ruled they both had myasthenia gravis (a neuromuscular disease leading to fluctuating muscle weakness and fatiguability), the woman, who is 45 was told her spine resembled that of a 80+ with serious injury. Since she started on a GF this has regenerated apparently. My grandfather and his mother both have severe back problems, but refuse to be tested for celiac or adhere to a GF diet.
ok well i have Celiac (which CAN also be spelled Coeliac) and it is not as bad as someone would think. I have a few things to say, 1. this isnt a YDI as Celiac still isn't extremely well known, and you still would get symptoms from other gluten (wheat, barely, rye, and most oats and ALL derivatives like malt). So it isn't just bread. Also, its not a YLIF because "normal" people can't understand it. It doesn't deserve to BE on FML because it is NOT an FML! 2. there are many alternatives and many GF companies like Bob's Redmill (i dont like it), Sans Gluten, GlutiNo, Tinkyada, Pamela's, and many more. You may not like some of the food at first, but it grows on you and is VERY tasty. I highly recommend getting Amy's Gluten Free Mac and Cheese from the freezer department. You can get a bunch of gluten-free stuff from Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Mustard Seed, and even Marc's, Giant Eagle, Hienens, and more! You can even have some beers... 3. Join a support group. It'll help you find out what's good and what isn't. 4. Get new sifters, collanders, and toasters. You can also get new kitchen utensils if you don't want to throughly clean yours. If you live with people eating gluten, keep a gluten-free freezer and make gluten-free kitchen utensils a color so you know the difference. Also, get a breadmaker, store-bought bread isn't very tasty. 5. Go through your kitchen and donate/throw away anything you cant have. 6. You are not allergic, you have an autoimmune disorder. But tell restaurant people you're allergic if they ask what Celiac is. ^_^ 7. Some places good with GF: PF Chang's (GF menu), Outback (GF menu), CHIPOTLE (just don't get tortillia), Maggiano's (chef comes out and talks to you), Eatin' Park (GF food on back of menu), Five Guys Burgers and Fries, and more. Many places don't have GF menus (yet) but are very accomodating. Hope all this helps you get started. I've been GF since August of 08 and I've been doing great!
Its not a big deal, I can't eat anything with gluten either. Once you cut all that crap out of your life, you'll feel so much healthier so don't worry. And if you're looking for the gluten free stuff, whole foods has an entire aisle of gluten-free flour, cereals, cake mixes, cookies, breakfast bars, and pretty much everything else!
Okay for all the people complaining that it took her a year to get diagnosed, obviously you don't realise that coeliac's is an odd disease in that people do not experience the same symptoms to the same degree. For example a person may experience the typical bloated belly, stomach pain, and loose stool, or they could exhibit skin rashes only, or they could have chronic fatigue and wind only. This means that it often is hard to diagnose. SECONDLY to the people complaining "oh no, why didn't she notice that she was sick after eating bread", the time between eating gluten and having a reaction varies between people. Often a day or two is typical. So, yeah, she could surely go "Oh no, I have an upset stomach again. It might be because in the last 48 hours I ate bread, jam, sugar, tea, butter, cereal, lettuce, cheese, cucumber, broccoli, rice, milk, pepper, chili, mushrooms, fish, cinnamon, or tomatoes, or it could just be that the food is off, or that I have some other disease completely unrelated to food like endometriosis, or maybe I have irritable bowel syndrome, or crones disease, or several things at once. Golly gosh." When I was diagnosed with coeliacs I went through 4 doctors before one even thought of coeliacs disease, most of them actually dismissed my claims of how frequently I was having horrible upset stomachs as "being neurotic"!!, and I had never even heard of coeliacs before. This was about a decade ago when people had hardly heard about coeliacs. If you went into a shop and said "do you have anything gluten free?" they would say "what? um... gelatine free?" Some places/doctors may still be ignorant, OR the FML may be from a while ago. It took me FOUR YEARS OF RECORDING SYMPTOMS, SWITCHING DOCTORS, HORRIBLE PAIN, FEAR I HAD SOMETHING FATAL (the symptoms kept getting worse) BEFORE I FOUND OUT THAT I HAD COELIACS DISEASE. So don't knock her for taking a year to find out.
LOUISE CAKE: Mix 1 1/3 cups fine cornmeal 2/3 cup rice flour 2/3 cup soy flour 3tsp baking powder (make sure you get baking power which doesnt have wheat flour mixed in to make it run better) 1 cup sugar 180 grams butter (softened) Add 2 lightly beaten eggs Press out onto two large trays covered with baking paper, smooth with a lightly floured rolling pin Bake at 180*C (don't know what that is in farenheit for you americans :P) for 15 min or until lightly browned. Spread 1/3 a cup of rasberry jam on each of the trays Top with: 4 egg whites beaten stiff add 8 oz of sugar fold in 100 gr dessicated coconut (again they can even add flour to coconut so be careful) Bake 30 min on 150*C.

that does suck. but. didn't the bread just make you feel worse? and if so, why did you keep eating it each time?
Im sorry... I know what that one is like... they thought I had that too. There are plenty of support groups out there, and a lot of alternatives.. keep your head up!!!!
