seeing you from Florida that a fair question considering the standards sorry mad at it rn going to get voted down
Actually, that's a somewhat relevant question, as in creative writing tasks, you may want them to be focusing on the content, genre or other skills than grammar and spelling. This didactic technique can be very liberating for students who struggle, particularly younger ones.
still a valid question
Why isn't a marking scale avalible to your students?
Sounds like most of my english classes were. Hang in there op! If you're lucky you might get a grammer nazi Shakespeare nerd like me eventually. Until then I'm afraid you'll probably have the challenging job of drilling a love of English into them. Also, this is why I'm never teaching highschool. :/ There is no individually or free thinking. Good luck to you op.

I think that's a fair question depending on the class and what kind of teacher you are. Because if the point if the essay was say, structure. You might take the pressure off of them by forgiving a few spelling errors. I know I had teachers in high school that delayed whole exams by a week because the class as a collective didn't feel prepared and wanted more time to study.
If it's a typed essay, there's really no excuse for spelling errors.
