Definitely not going to defend myself, it was a dumb thing to do. Although, I did whisper, not shout, an answer just to get my friend on the right track. I totally respect my teacher and it was the kind of whisper that probably would have been tried in any class with a hearing teacher as well. She was a great teacher and I think I learned better that way. There is a mix of deaf and hearing asl teachers at my school, though. It was amazing though, because she didn't respond to phones going off, people sneezing, people walking in late (until she saw them) and even the people bashing asl and deaf people in the hall one day.

That teacher is an idiot.
No, I don't think so. I really don't see how someone teaching sign language is stupid for not talking or acting like she can't hear. I think she is a genius. At the start of class when everyone is asking tons of questions, she doesn't have to deal with it because people think she can't hear them or answer and they don't yet know sign language. She doesn't have to answer stupid questions, it's genius. And it helps them learn better by tossing them into the scenario even more than a hearing/speaking teacher. Rather like in Japanese class, our teacher never once spoke English, she tossed us in and we figured it out. Although we fully knew she spoke perfect English, we never once challenged her on it.
my japanese professor does the same. i feel bad because i cant understand the language when it is spoken fast and i get so confused and sometimes give her a blank look if she calls on me :/ it really helps though to be completely immersed in a language though
Cheating is NEVER acceptable. NEVER.
That is absolutely awesome, I would've done the same thing in her situation. It's amazing what people will say about you when they think you can't understand, and I think she did a very good job in showing you how many of your classmates are assholes that would take advantage of a disabled person. Shame on you for being one of them.
YDI for trying to take advantage of her perceived disability. hopefully you have learned from this and go on to do great things.
"I'll take poor assumptions for $800, Alex."
Look on the bright side... At least now you know for when you retake the class.
not everyone who speaks sigh language is deaf. she was probably testing u guys by not talking. u failed
YDI 1) for cheating 2(assuming she was deaf, 3)even if teacher was deaf, a lot of deaf people know how to read lips.
how do you know she assumed. the teacher may have let the class know she was deaf.
As a kid I once had an art teacher who could hear but she learned sign language because her father was deaf. I learned how to sign "You drive me crazy" and "You bug me" from her, hehe.
