I have a disability called prosopagnosia, or face-blindness, which means that I am unable to recognize, remember, or distinguish between faces, including those of people whom I may know very well such as relatives or colleagues. It may be that the boss is also face-blind. The majority of people with prosopagnosia never actually learn that they have it; they spend their whole lives blundering horribly and think perhaps that they're just dumb without learning that there's a reason why.

yeah that's happened to me. I'd been at work for an hour, and my manager rang home to ask if I could come in for a shift. only to have my sister freak out because I'd left for work an hour earlier

Hey you don't know what was going on with the boss today, maybe she just had something important playing on her mind. At least she pays enough attention to you to be concerned when you didn't show for work
