right, because the customer is actually going to kick your ass. Just check anyway and get over your fear of people. I voted that you deserved it. Learn to do your job properly or get a new one that isn't customer service since clearly you have no people skills whatsoever.
I had a man slam a shopping cart into me simply because I was doing what I was supposed to and checking his ID against his credit card before I would ring up the sale. If they say they will kick your ass for doing something there is a very good chance they might actually do it, or at least try.
so that's when you report them, I used to work in customer service all the time. One time at Tim Hortons the new girl didn't stir a persons coffee, and the guy freaked out on me for it because I was training her. He told me if she didn't get it right, he would throw the coffee on me. She didn't get it right, but he didn't throw it at me. He just started shouting more about idiot employees at Tim Hortons and then left.
I agree with you that the OP should have reported the guy. That would be a smart thing to do. I am just saying that it is better to take any threat seriously then to just blow it off and regret it later. There are people who will carry out their threat.
You have the right to refuse service to anyone who threatens you. Next time call the supervisor right away and tell them that the customer has "declined to have his cart checked" and let them decide what to do next.
ahh the joy of working in retails.
The customer is always right. Unless he's an asshole thief.
"Thieving asshole" probably would have prevented this catastrophe. I apologize to everyone who had to suffer through pendatik's and perdix's self-indulgent claptrap.
fthku - my response was every bit as much of a joke as theirs. Sorry if my sarcasm didn't come across. :) And yes, my ass is tight for fear of the asshole thieves. *cowers in the corner with cheeks clenched*
Is this asshole theivery a new trend? Or were the victims too embarrASSed to come forth?
that totally sucks! it's not your fault if you're life was being threatened by a customer! :( your boss is a douche, my friend.
No, the customer was a douche and there are measures that could have been taken by the OP
If he hits you thats assault. You did not instigate him, it was company policy. You should have said "Sorry sir, Company policy." and checked anyways. If he tried to hurt you, he would go to jail.
Actually, that would be battery. What he said could already be construed as assault, I think.

check it anyway
I kind of doubt that the customer would have "kicked your ass" had you checked. Did you tell your boss about it?
