Well obviously the dog means more to you than it does to him. It's your dog and he can't just take it from you. Hopefully he doesn't try stealing it from you.

You should get a bigger dog, something that'll freak him out. Like a large pit bull. If you can make sure it gets along with the first dog, the new one won't let your ex hurt it.

I figured he just really loves the dog, is going to miss it, and made the joke that he should get to keep the dog. He's not going to tell you he should keep the dog, and then try to steal it. Make himself suspect #1 intentionally? Doubt it. You would obviously know where to look for him. Stupid people.
