Today, my boyfriend and parents went out to dinner. As we started the meal, my boyfriend proposed and the restaurant burst into applause. My mother said without hesitation and a large scowl, "If you say yes, I'm leaving." FML

Hi, FMLer here. The reason my mother said that was because she wanted me to get back together with my first boyfriend, though I've been with my new fiance for 5 years. She never got over me leaving my first and never accepted anyone after. And as you might have noticed in my previous paragraph- I said yes! (And by the way, my father told my mother if she leaves, he'd stay and wouldnt give her the car keys. ;) )

#125- since when does "tradition" mean strict regulation? And if they are old enough, and not being completely careless/irresponsible, than who cares? Which is not the case as the OP stated in her comment that it was simply because the mom cared more for her first boyfriend. A dumb reason to not give a blessing to her daughter who is CLEARLY more happy with her current significant other. By the way OP, yours is a situation i can completely sympathize with. There hasn't been a proposal, but my boyfriend have been together for 4 1/2 years and my mom is JUST now coming around to him. Good Luck!

I would never forgive my mom if she ruined the moment of getting proposed to for me. Fo most of women it's something really exciting and awsome that only happens once, mabye twice in a lifetime (twice if you divorce and remarry). If you forgave your mom, you are one very good person.
