Today, my boyfriend and parents went out to dinner. As we started the meal, my boyfriend proposed and the restaurant burst into applause. My mother said without hesitation and a large scowl, "If you say yes, I'm leaving." FML

Hi, FMLer here. The reason my mother said that was because she wanted me to get back together with my first boyfriend, though I've been with my new fiance for 5 years. She never got over me leaving my first and never accepted anyone after. And as you might have noticed in my previous paragraph- I said yes! (And by the way, my father told my mother if she leaves, he'd stay and wouldnt give her the car keys. ;) )

You know what, OP? Now that I read #25, I have to say that I think now more than before that your mother might be a Narcissist. Children of these kinds of people often think of themselves subconsciously as not even existing. The way you wrote that post actually is kind of weird. If you do have a mother who constantly has made you invisible all your life the way she did in this FML, then you may be wise not to marry your boyfriend; children of Narcissists who have not been treated by a therapist often marry Narcissists.

Wow...maybe he shoulda asked you first like alone I know he wanted it to be a surprise thing in front of loads of people but maybe not your parents I wouldn't necessarily say let your mum walk...it depends on how close you are with your folks...
