KatzVKatz tells us more.
Hey, I didn't think this would get published, but here it is! Now for some explanations: 1. I did watch Pokemon when I was younger and I liked it. When he dared me to name 10 first gen Pokemon I was sure I could do it ... Guess my memory is not that good, but I already know that :D 2. He did admit eventually that he was sorta kinda joking. I knew he couldn't be serious about dumping me, but he did take the joke a bit too far, like yelling at me and sulking for half an hour. 3. I do take interest in his interests, we talk a lot about the games he plays and the series he watches, and do a lot of stuff together. We do have a lot in common. It's just that where he likes Pokemon to the point of fangirling about it, I'm the same with Harry Potter and Dr. Who. 4. I asked him to name ten spells from Harry Potter and he couldn't do it, so I guess we're even! Ha! :D

Some girls would have dumped him because he could name ten.
How the hell can you not even name 10, Pokemon is most kids childhoods, you deserve it OP.
He clearly does have his priorities straight, you're the one who is confused.
Damn right his priorities are straight. Squirtle, charizard, pikachu, tododile, alakazam, metapod, milktank, slowpoke, mew, caterpie, sparrow, and ekans
That was 12, you were only supposed to name 10. Geez, do you ever listen?
totodile is gen 2...

Will do :D
I was actually pretty embarrassed, yeah :D I think it's time to watch some Pokemon.
It seems he did take the joke a little too fad... riddikulusly honestly. Don't let him alohomora your legs and slytherin for a little while. Get him to sleep on the couch!
Haha, that made me lol :D
At least he only wanted you to name 10, my boyfriend is very proud of the fact that he can name the first 100 pokemon almost in order. I can name a good chunk of pokemon but not nearly as much as he can.
harry potter HAS ten spells? i only remember like...5 in the whole book series. harry himself only used three: stupify, expecto patronum, and ... shit his go to one... repel..something? been a while...
Yes, exactly. If you're not a big fan, of course you won't remember. And it's Expelliarmus ;)
The spells for Harry Potter are a lot more ridiculous, though. They're arbitrarily based around Latin roots (IIRC), whereas Pokemon names were localized. JigglyPUFF, a giant balloon. RATtata and RATicate, small rodent Pokemon. GROWLithe and ArCANINE, dog Pokemon. IMO, although I'm biased towards Pokemon and willing to admit it, Pokemon *should* be easier to remember casually.
70- As someone rereading the book series for the first time in years, I can tell you that Harry uses waaaaay more than three spells. I can see how they'd be hard to remember though
what about Avada kadavra? and that levitating spell... uhh leviosa with a "sah" ? I should step up my HP game..
I'm interested to know which Pokemon you named
And yet I can name so much Harry Potter spells. Well...it sort of seems obvious I can though... Let's see...Levicorpus, Sectumsempera, Reducto, Incendo, Avada Kedavera, Crucio, Imperio, Expelliarmus, Wingardium Leviosa, Point Me, Locomotor Wibbly, Aquamenti, Accio, Protego, Lumos, Lumos Maxima, Nox, Apriculum, Alohamora...ok so I misspelled some, but you should get the point now
I think the main difference is that most spells in Harry Potter aren't really integral to the story. The examples of spells being more than just shouted from time to time are few and far between, like the Wingardium Leviosa or Avada Kadavra scenes/chapters, whereas Pokemon are both characters and constantly called by their names in the show (or encountered to the point of nausea in the games). If I had a quarter for every Team Rocket Koffing I've knocked out in my lifetime, I could afford to custom-order a life-size statue of myself posed victoriously on top of a giant pile of defeated Koffing.
You should have asked for the names of 5 My Little Ponies. You can spin that into a reason to dump him whether he can do it or not.
He couldn't name ten Harry Potter spells? That's a paddlin'
But the spells are sometimes hard to hear or pronounce considering they are Latin words
I took two years of Latin in high school, I know a fair bit of Latin, and that's the only reason I remember a few of the spells now. Yes, Latin is pretty easy to learn for most first-world countries since since the Romance languages are based upon it, which English borrows a lot from, but in my opinion, the author never made a big enough deal of the spells in the series. It's something you'd have to research side material of (encyclopedia/information books, games, fanfiction) to truly get down pat.
A lot of time the spells are referred to by title rather than invocation, as well. You're more likely to read that a stunning spell was used than the invocation itself. Some of them only get their invocation listed in supplementary materials.
#74 The Latin roots aren't arbitrary at all... it would sound stupid to base them around English, imagine "knock-outify" or "repellio"! The author has a degree in Classics which explains the plethora of Latin and Greek in the books :)
Pokemon: Pikachu, Ekans, Charzard, Bulbasaur, and... uh... I'm done Harry Potter: Stupify, Avada Kedavra, Sescrutempa, Aquamenti, Redikkulus, Crucio, Accio, Leviosa, Repardo, and Incendio. I'm sure I screwed up on the spelling, but here you go!
Harry Potter AND Doctor Who? Shame you have a boyfriend already ;) lol
Stupefy, expelliarmus, avadakedavra, crucio, impedimenta, lumos, mosmorde, imperio, petrificul totalus, sectumsempra, nox, accio, alohamora, defindo, flipendo, flipendotria, confundus, silencio, levicorpus, wingardiam leviosa, protego, stupefy, bombarda, bombarda maxia, reducto, reparo, metamorphajinxincanto ( weather ) , and i am a nerd ?
Avada Kadavra, Sectum Semprum, Expelliarmus, Protego, Expecto Patronum, Locomotor, Wingardium Leviosa, Accio, Aguamenti.
I wouldn't have just considered dumping you. I would have done it on the spot.
If he is willing to dump you over something as stupid as that, than you don't need him. Dump him and say "sorry I don't date 6 year olds who watch Pokemon"
How does liking Pokemon make you a six year old? OP also stated they have a lot in common...
Him liking Pokemon was never a problem with me. What was problematic, however, was his attitude toward me not being able to name 10 of them. But he did say (after the FML was written) that he was joking, so all is forgiven.
Maybe the show is for kids but if you've ever played Pokemon properly you'd understand that it is not really a game for kids, there's a lot of complexity and maths involved in the competitive play which most kids wouldn't have the patience nor the intelligence to be able to learn, I guess kind of like you really.
Also it seems you have stolen my dog.
Charmander, bulbasaur, pikachu, volpix, ninetails, charizard, growlith, mew, raichu, golduck, I got you covered
Use Mismagius or Delphox. Perhaps Braxien?
YDI for not knowing at least 10 pokemon Kidding
