Today, my boyfriend still won't talk to me, after I caused him the "worst embarrassment" of his life in front of his friends. What did I do wrong? I joined their conversation and ended up confusing the fictional characters of Gollum and Yoda with one another. FML

Seriously, most of you need to calm the hell down! While OP made a dumb mistake, it's no reason to insult her and go as far as saying she deserves being ignored by her boyfriend, especially if she apologized or laughed at herself after making said mistake (not that she said, but she might have tried making the situation better afterwards). Not everyone is a hardcore sci-if or fantasy fan. A lot of you who think you're so super-special-awesome for being fans of LOTR and Star Wars should get off your high horses and stop acting like it's such a sin for someone to not like everything you do or know everything about it. Believe it or not, like me, it IS possible to not be exposed to either throughout one's life.

The point here isn't that she mixed them up. It's that her boyfriend considers it 'the worst embarrassment of his life' and won't talk to her because of it. That's the reaction I'd expect from someone whose girlfriend had said something horribly racist or denied evolution because they think the Earth is only 6000 years old, not because her pop culture knowledge isn't quite up to speed. His reaction SHOULD have been to announce that she would be spending the next two weekends watching two movie trilogies.

As punishment, you should be forced to watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Hobbit, and the entire Star Wars saga. And then write a paper about the differences between the characters.
