I think caking on make up attracts people who find your artificial face good looking - not your real face. Those guys will tend to think that's how you should just look naturally, so whenever you don't... It's pretty unfair. Find someone who thinks your actual face is beautiful.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with choosing to wear makeup for yourself. So to the people telling OP to stop wearing makeup... nah, she can wear whatever she finds pretty. Just like she can pick out whatever clothes she wants or have her hair how she wants. There definitely is something wrong with people putting pressure on you to do so. So while there's nothing wrong with your boyfriend saying "I like your makeup today", there definitely is a problem if he's saying "you only look good in makeup". Just as it's okay for him to say "I like the dress you're wearing" but definitely not "you only look good when wearing clothes"! That may seem like a silly comparison but in my opinion it's pretty much the same kind of thing.
