Today, my company filed for bankruptcy, but the reorganize kind where it still functions. There are no funds to give out paychecks any time soon. They won't fire me. If I voluntarily quit, I cannot file for unemployment. I'm now an unpaid intern. FML

Actually, that is illegal (at least in my state). By law they are required to pay you, by the conditions outlined by your employment, for the work you have done for a week by the following Friday, if they can't pay you they have to terminate you.

This mess is from the republicans not Obama, it started before he was even running for president and base on you made the comment, it was only his fifth month in office and is still under Bush's policies so it is Bush who screwed the country.

If you are not getting paid, you are unemployed. Your company can't retain you on happy thoughts and good intentions. You can file for unemployment right now. If you are eventually paid your back pay, you will have to repay your unemployment. If you don't, you will be audited when you file your taxes.

I don't know how it works everywhere, but this happened to lots of my friends who all worked for a company that went bankrupt. By law, they all had to be paid eventually--the government picked up the tab. It did take a while, like 6 months, but they all got paid for the days they put in.

dude stop going to work then. They'd have to fire you and even if they didn't, at least you wouldn't be going to work and not being paid. plus then you could find an additional job.

51 - so what if it's happening to everyone? If I get my dick cut off, is it any less fml worthy because the guy next to me got his dick cut off as well? What does affording gas have to do with anything? Affording internet? Ever heard of walking? It's where you take your one foot and put it in front of your body, and then do that with the other foot, and then keep doing that until you reach your destination. Consumes no gasoline. And whether or not he has money to be able to pay for gas or internet is irrelevant. The fact that he is working and not getting paid, nor would he have any means of income otherwise is the FML. FYL for coming to retarded conclusions.

Um? You could sue them for not paying you if they owed you a paycheck. They can't hand out IOUs. That's not how businesses work. I should know, I'm also in a company that filed Chapter 11. I tried to volunteer a few hours to help with the extra work load (everyone took a 20% pay cut and an extra day off, but the work doesn't stop for anyone) but that's illegal to do because, well, they have to pay you if you're working at your place of work. Period. This came from our legal advisement lawyer, too. Seems strange or kinda fake to me. You might as well have just not worked while employed, but kept the job and grabbed a second one. Also: #103 has teh dumb.
