Today, my Dad thought "Joseph" and "Francis" were two people hacking our internet. They are actually the names of my laptop and iPod, which have now been blocked from using our modem. He can't figure out how to unblock them. FML

Hacking your Internet? What does that mean? Using your router?

I've named my computers, but it's just for convenience for friends and/or my roommate to go over and turn on a rig. What's easier: "Hey, can you turn on the computer sitting under the desk?" or "Hey, mind turning on DarkStorm for me?" All my friends know what my computers are named, plus it makes network file sharing easier.

It is not the modem that needs resetting derps, it is the router. There is a little hole in the back, use a pen and push it in for a few secs. You'll need to resetup your wep key but that is all the free tech support you'll get from me til you call your ISP.

why the **** would you recommend that she use wep, if i wanted to i could pull up within range of her network and crack into it in 5 min tops using a program in linux, It drives me insane when i see people using wep, the same thing goes for using hidden ssid's and mac protection. All you would have to do is use a sniffing program like kismet, wait until someone has sent something on the internet and then bam you have the hidden networks name, also with the mac addresses you just have to wait till someone logs off their network, then change your mac address to whatever theirs was and then happily go along with your business. really the only way to go is with wpa/wpa2

Lots of ISPs give combination modem/routers nowadays, so not necessarily. Also, WPA/WPA2 is much more secure than WEP. OP, get a friend that knows their shit to fix it for you, then make sure both you and your dad stay far away from it.

The first part of my post was in response to #79

having seen the same facepalm worthy point being made here time and time again, I'll try to explain what I think the person meant by saying that they named their computer and iPod... When it comes to computers and external computer compatible devices (such as iPods, USBs, or pretty much any other other potential part of a computer that has something to do with it, even things like keyboard, monitor, etc.) have essentially got names. These names are basically only really there so that the computer (and the user) can tell what part of the computer is talking about. It needs to be able to identify each and every part, on top of that, computers in a network need to know the name of the computer so that they can identify that computer better. While you do have your IP address, that can be a little confusing for someone to send a file over a network to a specific computer over a LAN (or a WAN) network...think about it, if you wanted to send a file to someone who you lived with and had a LAN connection with while the internet was down for whatever reason in your house it would make far more sense to upload it via a LAN network...which would be more difficult to do if you were on a network with 5 computers, one named 192.168.0.1, another one named 192.168.0.2, and so on till 192.168.0.5...do you really think that that would be a very efficient system of getting a file from one computer on a network to another? To avoid this dilemma, the people designing computer software came up with the bright idea of having people give their computers names...I'm not sure about how it is on other operating systems such as ubuntu or red hat, but when you install windows, it generally asks you to input a name for the computer, if you don't, it won't let you finish the installation of windows :) As for naming the iPod...same principle...when you plug in an iPod or USB you get the name of the device showing up...you know, when you open up 'My Computer' and your iPod is displayed there? it has a name there...even if it's the standard factory one, it's still a name to help you and the computer to identify it. I think I've just about covered it...now that I've gone on about that I don't feel like nitpicking the difference between a modem and a router ;)

You are a loser and you need to get a life
