Today, my daughter admitted why her grades, which are usually straight A's, have been slipping the past few weeks. Turns out she has been deliberately failing tests to avoid becoming valedictorian, so she won't have to deliver a speech at graduation. FML

Sounds like she has social anxiety or something of the sort. Ask her why she's afraid of giving a speech maybe?

hahaha that's a hard worker you've got there

Oh, for pete's sake. Fear of public speaking routinely beats out fear of death in psychological surveys...there's no reason to think this girl needs to go to therapy for some big social anxiety disorder; she's like the MAJORITY of people in the world.

To be able to public speak and to public speak well is a gif from God. Not everyone has that talent. So if I was in the same spot as the daughter of the person who posted this FML I would have done the same thing. Because I cannot public speak well at all.

So? I did the same thing.

I had my speech prepared. "YOLO. Swag! Idk, right? And in conclusion, peace out, yo" Sadly, I did not kill enough people above me in the class rankings to become valedictorian .

I understand where she is coming from I personally hate public speeches( especiall at school functions) and have sweated through every1 I have given and sadly that was my exact plan to get out of valedictorian

I considered doing the same thing due to my social anxiety, but ultimately was neither valedictorian nor salutatorian. I simply would not have been able to deliver a speech, and you know what? That's okay! That's just who I am and if people don't like it then it's their loss. I'm still happy, healthy, and successful! No need for me to change into something someone else wants me to be. Don't let your daughter think that her anxiety should determine her academic success- or any other direction life takes her. In the end, if she doesn't want to make a speech, no one can force her to. Someone else could read hers or create their own altogether. It's okay. She wouldn't be the first to refuse the podium and won't be the last. I wish her all the best in whatever endeavor comes her way.

Wow I wish I could do that....deliberately fail...

Why not just say no? Surely they can't make her do it against her will.
