A good data recovery service is in your future. It's not going to be cheap. As a photographer myself, I feel your pain.
#28 says it all
Congrats, you and your husband have ruined the memories of multiple weddings because you don't have enough sense to have more than one copy of the necessary data to run your 'business'. How ignorant can you possibly be? If you husband doesn't know what formatting is, why would you ever let him touch the drive? Do you have any idea how much you're going to be sued for? Perhaps you were unaware, but people take wedding photos extremely seriously.
Weak dude
there is such thing as data recovery software. costs bout $100 but it works. I know cause I saved over 250gb of music with one
Why would you only have one copy of something so important?????
ydi for; 1) giving it to him to fix 2) being married to a knob
GetDataBack for NTFS is a good data recovery program or you can pay someone to do it. FYL though
Why the hell are you letting your husband use your important external HDD? Seriously! YDI.

it's savable!!!!! don't do anything else to it and google how to recover data!!!
If your husband doesn't know what 'formatting' means, why was he the one attempting to fix it? Also, as you had important files on there, it might have been worth calling someone who was paid and qualified to do it. And this is what backing up is for.
