Today, my father lectured me for dating a man with "no future", even though he's entering a PhD program next year at a top university. Meanwhile, my dad's last relationship was with a 20-year-old hooker who ended up stealing his credit cards. FML

I suggest pointing that out to him and then I doubt he'll ever criticize your choices again.

And he's talking trash about YOUR relationship? Wow

As long as your boyfriend treats you well and you like him don't stress about what anyone says - ESP your hooker loving Dad.

I just came from iFunny and all i have to say is that every one on this app is so much more friendly. The top comments are always nice advice for the OP, (or some friendly critizicism) unlike iFunny where the commenta are all nasty and about dicks

Did your father know about this? Maybe he just didn't want you ending up having a similar experience to his.

Hope you have a great relationship OP, and sorry you got a dad who can't be happy for you.

He is probably just trying to stop you making the same mistakes he made - ending up with someone who doesn't contribute to your household income and leaves you paying the bills. I don't think there is all that much money in being a phd student and no guarantee of a job afterwards. Yes, he is being very pessimistic and overprotective but he is probably still raw from his own dating disaster. Maybe give him some time to see that your bf isn't a waster?

Wow. I didn't know my ex wife had moved out to Oregon.

Sometimes, it's just best to ignore your dad.

Sometimes parents say shit the reflects their failures. If you see a great future with your significant other then ignore your father OP

That's pretty hypocritical and messed up. The only good thing I can say for him is that because of his past failures he probably is trying to be extra careful the same doesn't happen to you.

I don't normally advise ignoring parents, but this is an exceptional case.
