Try sitting down with the owners, and tell them that you absolutely love every thing about the house. Go into detail. Tell them that this is the house that you've dreamed about. The house that you want to start your family in. The house you want to raise children in. Sometimes, sellers are not just after the highest bid. You have to remember that this was their home. They had many good memories there, probably made changes to the house that they're proud of. I recently sold my home about six months ago. I spent two years renovating it, and I loved every thing about it. I received many offers, but ultimately went with the THIRD highest bid. The highest bidder pissed me off with how much they talked about what they were going to change. Things that I spent so much time and effort doing, they were so nonchalant about ripping out and replacing. There wa a 55k price difference between what the highest bidder and third highest bidder offered, but I don't regret missing out on that 55k. The people who now own my home (third highest bidder) I could tell that they genuinely liked what I'd done with the house. The fact that they weren't able to offer more didn't factor into my thought process whatsoever. They were the ones that I really hit it off with. I even threw them a housewarming party and gave them items that were custom-made for that home because the wife loved them so much. Sometimes, money isn't everything. I don't see how this is a FML yet. You can still fix it if you try.
Psych her out - tell her that you've had building inspections done & that the sewerage lines are bad, that there's too many repairs that need to be done to bring it up to code etc and that you are lucky you didn't bid on it as it's going to be a nightmare and wish her luck with it... then watch her retract her bid - success!
On one hand, she's a major bitch for making an offer on the house you and your fiance were planning on buying. On the other hand, that's what you get for bragging about something that's not even yours yet.
Don't brag...
