Scientology or Christianity - it doesn't matter. Most people interpret their own religions to justify the views they already have or their denomination has. They'll lie and twist it around until they construct a false rationalization they can believe in. No religion can save someone who isn't willing to separate themselves from the flock and find the truth with their own open mind.

The OP seems surprised by his fiancee's mom. Try talking to any religious person who actually worships, tell them that they're in a cult followed by simple-minded asshats, and see what their reaction is. If their religion has a hell, I bet the response will be similar; if it has a neutral afterlife like Hades or Sheol, they might be tempted to send you there directly. ALL religions are cults followed by simple-minded asshats. The good thing is that most of them don't actually read their scripture and believe in it; if they did, Christians would be stoning women for adultery and killing idolaters, which they've been doing for millenia.
