inner5yearold tells us more.
all the people saying that we were doing drugs or other illegal activities, we werent. we were just college students who had a lot of stress, and wanted to relax by acting like five year olds in the park, swinging on swings, playing on the see-saw, going down slides, monkey bars etcetera. we did not know the park closed after dark, there were no signs by the entrances, and there were no gates. anyone can walk in there at any time of day, and they would not know. the weathered sign, we found it the next day, and it was at the back of the park, no where near any lights or anything. we were just chilling there because we didnt want to go back to our rooms because of annoying roommates. there was even an overhead light shining into the park, giving the impression that it was open after dark. the police didnt even ask if we were doing anything illegal, or asked to see what was in our pockets or anything. two of us didnt even have any ID because we didnt want to lose it on the swings. new ro police are entirely retarded. period.

i'm sorry that happened to you guys. laws are going insane with restrictions. you guys have every right to blow off steam and instead of drinking or doing drugs, you did something fun and energetic. good for you
8 hours and $25 dollars!? Oh, noes, FYL, how will you ever survive!? Quit whining, wuss.
Yes 8 hours of community service and $25 is normally not a bad deal, if you were smoking pot or drinking in public. As someone who has experienced this, i can definitely empathize and say that it is incredibly unfair, in New York hundreds of crimes go unnoticed a day, and that's just in the subways, go above ground and you'll see someone breaking the law every other block, and yet the only people cops seem to catch are innocent college students sitting around in a park (and for all you who claim all parks close after dark and we should know this by now, check out any of the big ones like central park and you'll see they're open 24/7 for all the moronic tourists who want carriage rides at 3am). Cops want to meet their quota and bloomberg loves money and since it's easier to fine some kid sitting on a swing then catch a mugger rapist or robber, the innocent college kid will always be the easier target.
Franck, no, it's not a crime to be in a place where people sometimes commit crimes, but if you can stop people from committing crimes by keeping people out of a place, that is sometimes the better option when the law is otherwise harmless. No one suffers by not being able to swing in the late hours of the night, but a lot of people can suffer if the law is not enforced. I'm not saying it's perfect, and you can debate it if you want, but the principle of the law is not in itself stupid.
I understand your point, and again, I agree to some extend, I just have 2 problems with that point of view : 1- People who are not doing anything morally wrong can still be prosecuted 2- No one suffers by not being able to do many things / going to many places, it doesn't mean we can take that Right from them "just in case". Who sets the limit to preventive law enforcement? Isn't it a step towards a society as the ones imagined by Huxley or Orwell? When they take the Right to enjoy a sunset on the beach from you because many drug addicts are also there at that time, will you be that understanding with them? Where will it stop? I am a good person, I do no wrong to people, I want to be free to walk the earth, and when I get in trouble for it, feel free to tell me that I totally deserved it.
Wow, that really sucks for you. I had nearly the same problem though, a whole group of my friends and I decided to go to the park at night to hang out. A few hours later a police car rolled up and marched everyone back and began to lecture and question us. Not a single one of us had any marks on our record so they let us all go without any fines (and in my state, the fine is over $600, not a mere $25). Now a lot of people are saying that the OP "should have read the signs". I'd like to mention that for a few of my friends and I, it was the first time we had ever gone to this park, and the entrance we used did not have any signs posted, so the same might be true for the OP as well. But imo, the problem lies in the fact that in my area there really is no place for teenagers to hang out at night. We can't all group together at someone's house, we can't even go to a park. This is where we get the problem of graffiti, and property destruction, because kids are so dang bored and we don't have anywhere to just hang out together.
Are you sure that is the whole story?
