Today, my furnace broke down, almost a month after its twenty year warranty expired. It would have been replaced for free. Now I'm going to have to take out a loan to afford the $4,000 replacement. FML

i do hvac for a living and you might be reading the warranty wrong..most furnace manufacturers only put 10-20 years(some have buy ups to get to 20) on the heat exchanger and 5 years or less on the rest of the furnace. it sucks it went out on you but ill let you know now the new one you are going to put in will have a shelf life of 10-12 years after that every day is a blessing. they do not make things the way they used to because they realized if they make something that last 40+ years like they did in the past they wont have repeat business thats why only 5 major brands exists in the us anymore they give you the illusion of a huge selection by branding their products with up to 6 different names..ex york-coleman-luxair are the same company

That happened to me, my Ford escape 10 miles out of warranty the transmission went out

Well, that's because some people are cheap and always want more money, So they make their products to only last trough the warranty, that way you will have to by another. It's terrible, but it's the truth. I'm sorry OP! Maybe buy a different brand?!

wow must say that's an awesome marketing strategy by a company who offers a whooping 20 year warranty !!

Look at it this way, that furnace provided TWO DECADES of good use. The replacement unit will have the latest technology improvements and be more energy efficient.

You could try to get one of those differed loans from Lowes. Their 12 month same as cash, but be very careful and pay it all off before the 12 months otherwise they will charge you the compounded interest of the entire 12 months for the entire amount you borrowed and not what is left to pay off.

Why haven't you been getting it maintained annually? They might've found the problem sooner.
