We've had no heat for 2 years in Virginia & we've survived, pretty comfortably too! You'll live!
Check that old warranty again. Chances are it wasn't to replace the entire thing after 20 years. You would have been more streamed to find out that the warranty wasn't as wonderful as you thought if it broke down a month ago.
I used to do furnace installs and just did one for a friend of mine for cost of furnace which was $600 plus parts and labor. He ended up paying $900...
Added to my to do list - befriend a furnace installer when I buy a house. ;)
Renew your warranty and then get it replaced. It will cost a lot less...

Warranty or not I wouldn't complain about anything lasting 20 years. I would say you got your money's worth and then some.
