Today, my girlfriend bought several bottles of Potassium Iodine pills and a gas mask, due to the radiation scare from Japan. We live in Texas. FML

There's background radiation everywhere, all the time! Gasp! Your phone gives off radiation, oh no! There's more radiation in a CT scan than the area 20km outside of the nuclear plant in Japan.

I live somewhere where the radiation levels are tested hourly at this point. So, yes, I do know what the levels are and I've had to wear one of those stupid things that read radiation levels.

15, 35, & 57, radiation is all around us. We each get 100-300 mrem per year just by living. People aren't concerned about radiation "escaping" the plant, they are concerned about fission products, i.e. radioactive contamination spreading. However, it's a bit extreme for people in Texas to begin preparing for a nuclear holocaust.

Ok, 1.) Not ALL Americans' are stupid. I will say there are some stupid people here that think we are the only country in the world. And there are some people that think we are the most amazing country (comment 50 i.e.), although we are in tremendous debt to every other country. But there are a few Americans' left that actaully have hearts and care obout other countries well-being. Not all Americans' are are completely and utterly stupid. 2.) The people saying Texans' are stupid are stupid themselves. Once again there are stupid people in Texas but not all of us are dumbass rednecks. I went to college, I made good grades in school, and I happen to have a heart. I dont ride a horse, actually I've never been on a horse. I dont wear boots and a cowboy hat. All these sterotypes are bullshit. That would be like me saying all French people stink, all asian people are smart, all Irish are drunks, or all New Yorkers are Yankees. Its sterotypes and not all of them are true. So people please if youre going to believe in sterotypes at least get facts first.

So true! Yes our public education system sucks but not everyone is dumb. I went to a top private school, got straight into the college of my choice, but I still wear jeans and boots, my family has a ranch full of horses (so when I'm done with college I will be riding my horse to work lol), I ride almost every day, and I drive a truck. Sweet tea is a staple in my diet, we say a prayer at every rodeo (and I go to lots of them), and I'm going to college to get a degree in horses. So even the people who fit the stereotype so to speak, aren't all stupid.

Obviously not 100% of Texans are stupid. But the ones who buy iodine and a gas mask because of a radiation leak 6500 miles away are hurting your statistics, as are the bible thumpers with government positions.

If anyone is really worried about the radiation scare, just google "will radiation hit the west coast" and read the CBS news article. I wish more people did their research instead of panicking and buying potassium iodide pills (it's happening in the west coast).
