While the person who responded before me is wrong as to why pugs were first bred [pugs didn't always look like that] and why they were bred to look like they do now, he is right that they SHOULDN'T look that way. The "snorting and snoring" is because pugs have a very hard time breathing. They're also prone to a condition called "cherry eye."

You said it yourself, they snort and snore when they sleep! That's not cute, that's sad. Dogs today shouldn't have snouts that hinder their breathing. Same goes for Persian cats. :(
