Today, my grandma threw away my clear retainer thinking it was plastic from packaging. She has done this three times now. They cost 300 dollars to replace. FML

Hey guys OP here. To answer some questions, yes I have told my grandmother various times that I have a retainer, and that it looks like packaging and to not throw it away. I do keep it in a plastic case but I only wear it at night so when I am out shopping for her or walking her animals she snoops in my stuff. I have tried keeping it in my room to keep away from her but the door always "accidentally" opens and her animals find it and play with it because animals like the saliva taste on the retainer, it is then she thinks it's packaging and throws it away.

Just put it in your room and tell your family you can look after that. I can leave whatever I want in mine and no one will throw it away. But then I do clean my room myself. Maybe, if you look after your own shit, people won't think they need to clear it up for you with these accidents as a result.

Retainers belong in your mouth not something to display out in the open. if you're eating something its not that hard to keep track of/keeping retainers in plain sight. I'm an adult and never needed braces/retainers so I'm sorry if I'm wrong about this but, don't you need to wear retainers to prevent your teeth from shifting and needing to go back to braces?

It read depends on your prescription. That tells you when to wear it and if you have to where it all the time, ect

I understand wanting a clear one so people won't know but at this point it be cheaper to go with a color like blue so that she knows its the actual thing that or stick a post it on it saying actual retainer throw it away again and you'll be going to the nursing home
