Today, my grandpa set out snare traps to catch the foxes that have been around our property, because he wanted to protect our dog from being attacked by them. I then got a phone call from my dad telling me our dog got caught in one. FML

Unfortunately our dog has passed. It was a choke snare. I don't blame my grandpa he loved our dog just as much as we did, he was only trying to protect him. I don't know where you're from in the world but foxes and coyotes are not harmless. Our dog was a little shih tzu and a fox or coyote wouldn't think twice about attacking him.

Honestly, what was your grandpa thinking? That dogs are somehow exempt from traps?

Grandpa logic-Back in my day our dogs were smarter and didn't have all of this damned technology!

At least snares usually don't do much more than trap the leg a bit.

Maybe a trap cage would work better...unless you have a small dog...

No they're not they're viscous to smaller animals such as cats and have been known to kill and carry them off. There's a big chance of infection from a fox bite as well. Nothing to screw around with.

@29, Foxes are one of the most harmless animals? What planet are you from? Foxes can decimate a farmers whole entire flock of chickens in a few weeks. I know someone who had a family of foxes kill 5 of her guinea hens. Please tell us how they are harmless.

You guys do realize insulting this guy's grandfather is pointless? He made a mistake and snare traps are not nearly as bad as you guys are making them out to be. I'm sure the dog was fine, these are things you learn from.

OP said the dog died. He just commented. it's so sad.

**** your dogs' life. He got caught in one of those bastards when he was probably just trying to take a piss or something.

I hope it's alive and if it did die it died with no pain

I hate anyone who tries and kills foxes.

We don't like to kill, either, but sometimes there's no choice. We often see coyotes in the back of our field; my grandpa just shoots way above the coyote in order to scare it off and dissuade it from getting any closer to the house, since we've got chickens and a small dog. We take care to keep our chickens in a safe enclosure so as not to give predators a chance, but we would shoot to kill if need be. Sometimes there just isn't a choice when there's an animal attacking your pets.

Hope the dogs ok please update us OP. Also give your grandpa a slap round the back of the head for me please
