Today, my hamster had babies. I came home just in time to witness her kick the mutilated bodies of her two babies out of her house, then crawl back in and go to sleep. Now my sister refuses to touch her and calls her a "baby-eating demon." FML

Hamesters have been known to eat their babies, it's sad but normal.

Wonder if its a survival instinct? Or hamsters are just assholes?

Google 'Isabella Rossellini Hamster' and show her the video.

did you or your sister touch the babies? a lot of animals freak out if their babies have a lingering smell on them and end up killing them.

I had no idea hamsters were so violent o.O

Well, hamsters aren't all that good parents. If she (the hamster) was under stress or anything like that, it is kind of a normal response.

My gosh that sounds ******* horrifying. I'm never getting a hamster.

I had 3 hamsters and the pet store assured me that they were 3 males, turns out they were 2 females and 1 male. I thought they were fighting in the same cage because of their territorial issue, but it was just the male trying to mate with them. I found out the gender after my hubby heard squeaking sound and saw the male was gnawing off baby hamsters face while mother was trying to fight it off. The horrifying thing was the mutilated baby hamster was still alive but barely, so my hubby had to put it out of misery. I cried so hard for that poor thing. I wanted to kill the male but it was just acting on its animal instinct. So we just put it in a box until the next day we went out and got 2 separate cages. Well there were 4 other baby hamsters those survived but we had to sell them (along with their mom) to the pet store because we couldn't take care of all 7 hamsters, but they were so adorable though.

I adopted a hamster from my psychology class senior year of high school. There were a few hamsters for each class and originally my group thought the hamster was a male. A week after bringing it home (after days of convincing my dad to let me keep it), we left it with a pet sitter and went on vacation for a whole week. The day I came home the sitter informed me that my hamster was in fact a female and had TWELVE freaking babies. I suddenly had 13 hamsters to take care of after trying to convince my dad to let me just have the one. Soon after she had eaten 6 of them (found a stray amputated paw in the cage as well). The other 6 grew up and once they were weaned we gave them to the pet store to find them new homes.
