Today, my house was robbed. My two 70-pound German Shepherds obeyed me when I told them to attack. They also obeyed the robber when he said, "Sit". FML

When I was younger my mother had two German Shepherds as guard dogs at work, but they were not trained at all and were so friendly even kids weren't scared of them. They were also both very afraid of thunder, and when someone really broke into the office they probably gave the dogs a nice scratch behind the ears as thanks for making stealing so easy.

We used to have a German shepherd like that. We used to joke around and say if we ever got robbed, she would show the robbers where we kept the jewelry.

I believe shooting an intruder to defend you or your family's life, if the intruder is legitimately aggressive, but there is no reason to shoot someone because he's robbing your ****** DVD player.

Your dogs aren't stupid. You just taught them to obey commands. You never stipulated to them that commands from a intruder were to be ignored. I love German shepherds. They are beautiful dogs.

There is no YDI here. You have dogs, you've trained them, and they were trying to protect you. It seems odd that they'd listen to someone other than their master, but I guess the next step is to train them to ONLY stop on a specific command. My friend's Service Dog is still a puppy (18 m.o. black lab) and gets confused between "home mode" and "work mode". The harness helps, but if you're a family friend the damn thing begs for food and tries to lick your hand if you don't share. If you're a stranger, he'll ignore you. If you're a stranger coming into Friend's house, he'll eat your face. That's what happened to some EMTs until Friend called his dog off. Sorry to get OT and EXTRA sorry you got robbed. that's awful
