sounds like you could have made the most of it and has some fun not everything you do on vacation has to be planned
you're american tourists aren't you? just remember, travelling blind is a great excuse to have an adventure
When I go traveling to a place where the language will be a problem, I try to get a brochure or a business card that gives the name and phone number of the hotel that I am staying at, that way you can call the hotel or get a taxi cab and just show it to the driver or ask the locals to point the way to the hotel. I am sorry that you had that much trouble finding the way back to your hotel.
How the hell can't you understand a kiwi accent, it's barely even an accent
You should just be glad they speak English at all.. you could learn another language instead of bitching
I've seen about a thousand comments about buying a map or using GPS on a phone, and about a thousand comments on how they should have learned the language. Obviously if OP is taking a stroll around they won't be carrying a street map, they'd probably only have a road map. GPS on a phone? Not everybody is a rich, spoiled brat. It sounds nice, but you can hardly point fingers at somebody who doesn't own it. OP very clearly specified that it was the accent they could not understand, so the locals were speaking English. Enough ranting about learning the local language.
