Today, my husband and I went on vacation. We got lost and had to ask the locals for directions to our hotel. Neither of us could understand their accents, and we ended up wandering around blindly for hours until we made it back on our own. FML

Looks to me like the OP is from North America (US/Canada) and visiting New Zealand. The native language there IS English, but of course with a "New Zealand" accent. My parents were in that situation and sometimes had problems being understood by the locals.

That's part of the fun about traveling. Getting lost then finding an unexpected thing you would not have found on the regular tourist trails. Just don't get robbed.

So these locals could understand you well enough that they interpreted your request and provided answers and you couldn't understand them in return. What losers they must be

If you're ever in that situation again, make sure you take a map, but for gods sake make sure it's not apple maps
