When my father was complaining that my mom was eating too much while she was pregnant, his mom reached across the table and slapped him hard "She is pregnant, you get her what she wants!"

Sometimes, men and women miscommunicate, all because of how society and our generations have raised us, and even older people, despite denial, have their personalities forged to the influence of older styles, such as pushing hard on in-laws to feel self-secure and a feeling of protecting relatives. In spite of any suspected rude or condescending context, shrug it off and think that it's just making them feel comfortable in the same way you seek to be.
