Today, my mother decided to inform me that she doesn't believe canned food can have an expiry date and that the food is still okay to eat years after the 'supposed' expiry date. She's probably been cooking my dinner with expired food for over 17 years. FML

Canned food is good for a long time after the expiration date. Just sayin'. Manufactures print the "best by" date, but that doesn't mean it's spoiled even months later.

Has no one seen the episode of Horders where the lady had the can food so long that it actually MOLDED into the carpet? And the food was old that some of it was unrecognizable. ....

New flash: canned food is full of sodium and preservatives. Its good for years after its date. They put a date on the can so paranoid idiots like u buy more.

You got a lot to learn about OP. Your 17, chances are your mom knows more about life then your ass. Obey ur elders!!!

Canned food indeed does not have an expiry date, it has a best before date. This does not mean it has expired or went off, it means the company can't guarantee the same flavour and stuff after that date. It will not kill you! (if the can is intact)

canned food can he eaton up tp 17 ish years past it exp date. this is why people are told to stock up on them incase something happens

As long as the can isn't bloated, the food in it is good to eat.

Your mom is actually a smart mom since the only reason the companies put an expiration date is for people to throw out the supposivley "expired" food. The companies do this in hope to make more money and the canned food can go a few years passed the expiration date.

I wouldn’t say that’s the only reason – if they printed an expiry date at a point at which the food was likely to actually be dangerous, and somebody got food poisoning from it, they’d get sued left right and centre. Better to be safe than sorry!

If the can is expanded and looks like any sort of pressure could make it explode, it's gone bad. If not, it's still okay.
