It's not like you are owed a trip to NY. Sucks that you don't get a free trip, but suck it up cause it is your mother's money and she can spend it in whatever way she likes.
While I love Vegas, I don't plan on winning when I go. I don't get people who do. And I wouldn't cancel something previously promised to go. That's just ugh. Maybe you can plan a trip with friends for graduation yourself op? It may not be NY but you should celebrate and do something for yourself. A part time job or even work around the neighborhood for people can bring in enough of money to do something.
There is a first for everything!! In in all seriousness, I hope the OP's mother was inebriated when she made this dramatic shift in plans.
I hate it when parents promise something to their kids, then take away that promise for selfish reasons. The mom is totally not concerned about if she doesn't win big, where that leaves her kiddo (not being able to go period).
