They asked her about that and they barely know her? They are amazingly rude. She denies it? She's a psycho. Seriously, I hope you are seeing a therapist. These people, including your husband who did not jump in and back you up, have horribly deep issues, and so do you. Please get some help.
"Hi it's nice to meet you...soooo...how about them times that you were an alcoholic and gave up your child to foster services? Oh, we didn't quite catch your name."
I think your husband should know your not gonna lie about something so serious.
Prove if them?

Why would his family ask about something like that? That's such a private family issue that I feel they had no business bringing up.
Next time, YOU tell your in-laws before they meet your mother.
It was something her husband told them without telling her??? Generally, people don't tell people things about other peoples personal lives if they aren't necessary.
I really don't see how that's their business at all actually...
While i can understand why he would tell his parents something like that (its a huge part of your background) but I cant see why his parents would be rude enough to bring that up, especially the first time they met your mother, that is so incredibly rude.
Why would they ask her about that...?

Your husband's parents kind of seem like douchebags. Is that really something that should be brought up the first time meeting?
Just explain to them that your mom feels bad about it, and felt pressured when they brought up bad times from the past. They shouldn't have been so nosy anyways. Fyl op
