Today, my mother sent a letter to my best friend trying to comfort her over the death of her mother. She signed the letter "LOL, Jen" thinking LOL stood for "lots of love." FML

Today, my estranged mother texted me saying, "Gran died, LOL." My grandmother and I were fairly close, so I was shocked and disgusted. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and asked if she knew what "LOL" meant. She did. FML

Actually, I somehow got the impression that the OP is Jen, and that her mom sent the letter from her. I dunno why I thought that...but if it's true, that would definitely suck.

This is not an FML unless your friend is an extremely naive and ignorant person. Everyone knows lol often means "Lots of Love". Come on guys, context! Besides "laugh out loud" is an idiotic phrase. This is not an opinion. It's like the word "awesome", so overly used and so often misused. Why can't people just get a grip?
