Today, my parents told me that I had been accepted into my top two colleges, but they didn't show me the letters because they were worried that if they spent money on tuition, they wouldn't be able to keep BOTH of their brand new Mercedes. FML

haha, yeah i'm the OP. didn't know you need an account to comment...but I just wanted to clear up something. I didn't want my parents to pay, a simple "you got in" would have been nice. I was planning on doing ROTC and letting Uncle Sam handle my tuition.

That is so selfish. Take a Mercedes and just go.

I can't begin understand how a parent could put something like that above their own child's future, let alone lie about it.

BOTH? Are you kidding me right now? Geez, parents these days.

Parents like that shouldn't even be parents.

and for some odd reason they recieve a broken window before the school starts.

Ok, I have do e college both ways. When I started my parents were kiNd and gracious enough to pay my living expenses(I had a state paid scholarship for tuition). The help my parents provided stopped when my grades dropped below their expectations , as did the state scholarship. I am currently paying my way through school, living expenses, and working three jobs. I do believe that if parents have the ability to assist their children, they should attempt to do so as long as the child is doing their part to succeed . I appreciate what my parents did for me more now, than at the time they did it. Op's parents r selfish , childish , and image conscious jerks. They should have given op acceptance letters, and said this is how much we will help you. Figure out the rest.

Take a note, OP: Never become your parents! Money and status are not supposed to be more important than your family, especially your children! Best advice, get a job and put yourself through school as far away as you can get from them! Even if you have to start at a JC, you can reach your goals on your own.

I don't understand why in America its expected that the parents pay for their kids college education.

Try to figure this one out then, cause I sure as hell couldn't. When I applied for financial aid for my college, I was required to provide my parents' information and they were required to get a loan in THEIR name for MY school simply because I was not emancipated.

Maybe you should carefully remember your parents that you are the one who will choose and pay for their retirement home? And at #83 - Maybe because that is the only option for a lot of young folks? Not everyone can get a stipend and not everyone earn enough money to pay for his rent, his daily life and education AND still do his/her studies properly?
