Today, my parents told me that I had been accepted into my top two colleges, but they didn't show me the letters because they were worried that if they spent money on tuition, they wouldn't be able to keep BOTH of their brand new Mercedes. FML

haha, yeah i'm the OP. didn't know you need an account to comment...but I just wanted to clear up something. I didn't want my parents to pay, a simple "you got in" would have been nice. I was planning on doing ROTC and letting Uncle Sam handle my tuition.

That is so selfish. Take a Mercedes and just go.

I can't begin understand how a parent could put something like that above their own child's future, let alone lie about it.

ur parents r ******... i would walk out and never contact them again... its ur future they r ******* with...

That would be grand theft auto, so I highly suggest against doing this...on a side note its good op found a way in

Im not sure why everyone is bashing you and saying you should pay your own way. I was able to work my way through college but ONLY because I got great financial AID and I was able to qualify as an independent student at 18 years old, most people cannot until the are 24 years old or have a child otherwise they HAVE to disclose their parental income and that is factored into the amount you are given. Colleges ASSUME your parents will help you with at least partial tuition and when you have children their college education is something parents need to consider at least chipping in on. If OPs parents have the money to have two Mercedes their income probably disqualifies OP from financial AID. Even if they wanted to be selfish and not help OP it was completely out of line for them to hide the fact that you were accepted. Its not as easy as just getting loans or working your way through college, most people at 18 years old cannot just suddenly have a job that pays them enough money to pay tuition, buy books and still have money for food, room and board. Most 18 year olds also do not have the credit to get student loans without their parents at least cosigning. It is beyond selfish to have the means to help your child, especially when this child has the drive to go to college and the grades to get into good schools and decide not to because of your car. If you cant plan to at least chip in to send your child to college you're probably not responsible enough to have children in the first place.

I can see that your parents love you dearly

ummm your parents don't have to pay for your college. If you want to go get student loans like everyone else. kids these days feel entitled to there parents hard earned money. they raised you, put a roof over your head, fed and clothed you. I'm sure your life wasn't rough. while they pay for it do you want them to do your homework and get good grades for you to?

so it's right that they didn't tell their child they got into college because they fed said child and housed them?

Obviously you paid your way through college, unless you didn't go judging by the misuse of "there". This isn't about them not wanting to pay for it, it's about the fact that they didn't even tell him he was accepted. As it was stated before, it would be very hard to get financial aid because of his parents income, and if they don't even want to tell him he was accepted, then I'm pretty sure they wouldn't want to sign student loans with him.

READ. THE. POST. the problem wasn't them not paying. I was going to enlist as an able bodied soldier in the military and use the benefits to pay either way, but you can't pay if you never send an intent to enroll, which you can't do if people hid your mail from you.

So let me just point out, just because your parents 'clothed and fed you' does not mean you had a great life. No one knows OPs life but himself so we cannot judge. Have you heard of 'the child called it'? Yea his mom fed and clothed him, barely, but she did. As well as he had a roof over his head. So with your logic Dave had a GREAT life right?

HOW CAN YOU AFFORD TWO MERCEDES BUT NOT PAY FOR ONE COLLEGE THAT'S JUST HORRIBLY SELFISH. I FEEL LIKE I WANNA PUNCH THOSE PEOPLE THROUGH A WALL JUST FOR THIS.

His issue wasn't with the cars. HIS PARENTS NEVER GAVE HIM HIS ACCEPTANCE LETTERS!

I don't get why everyone is bashing OP, saying he should pay his own way through college. If he could, great, but consider this - most students who graduate from college don't get jobs in their line of work, if they get jobs at all, and are thousands of dollars in debt from student loans with no way to pay them off. If OP's parents can afford TWO brand new Mercedes, they should be able to pay to further their child's education without any qualms. If you ask me, they should get their priorities straight. No one needs two brand new cars of the exact same model. That's just ridiculous. If nothing else, why not a compromise? OP could pay half and the parents could pay the other half. They should at least do SOMETHING other than whine about not being able to pay for two expensive cars they didn't need. Owning those just gives them bragging rights; a car is a car. Its purpose is to get you from Point A to Point B. If you can afford the big fancy ones, great, but geez! So yeah, FYL OP. That's very crappy of your parents and a very lousy excuse.

I've got a great idea OP get a student loan and then get a job . That's what thousands of students do to go to college.

Just remember this when they are elderly and rely on you to care for them. In forty years you tell them "You have been accepted into the two top private nursing care facilities but you are going to the government run one as I want to keep my Mercedes" karma's a bitch.
