Today, my parents told me that I had been accepted into my top two colleges, but they didn't show me the letters because they were worried that if they spent money on tuition, they wouldn't be able to keep BOTH of their brand new Mercedes. FML

haha, yeah i'm the OP. didn't know you need an account to comment...but I just wanted to clear up something. I didn't want my parents to pay, a simple "you got in" would have been nice. I was planning on doing ROTC and letting Uncle Sam handle my tuition.

That is so selfish. Take a Mercedes and just go.

I can't begin understand how a parent could put something like that above their own child's future, let alone lie about it.

Is anyone actually reading what the OP said? He didn't say "accepted into the top two colleges", he said "accepted into my top two colleges". His top two schools could very well be two inexpensive schools, not necessarily Ivy League. He also never said he was mad about his parents not wanting to pay for tuition, he's mad that they hid the letters from him in order to keep their mercedes. Read the FML before you spout off about kids needing to take responsibility and pay.

YDI for expecting your parents to pay your way. Even if they have the means to do so, they should not be expected to pay for your education. Do it yourself. Go get a job, apply for scholarships and financial aid, and make something out of yourself.

Scholarships and financial AID are based off of your parents income in almost all cases, OP most likely will NOT qualify if their parents have the money to have more than one Mercedes.

Where does it say he expected them to pay? Oh right, it doesn't. OP is upset because they hid his acceptance letters, which they did because THEY assumed OP would want them to pay for everything. Heaven forbid they act like adults and sit down with OP and discuss what the financial expectations are after congratulating him on getting in!

It's called responsibility... It's your future not theirs... In my opinion, they are teaching you something schools don't teach... If you want anything in life, you must go out and earn it... Ask them to meet you in the middle with the tuition... I would never place my wants before my kids needs but I won't just give it to them either... It takes the value away... The greatest sense of accomplishment is knowing YOU overcame the odds to accomplish your goals

OP tried to 'go out and earn it', and then his parents hid his acceptance letters out of selfishness. Nowhere does it state that OP wanted his parents to pay for anything. Now OP has been denied the chance to better himself because his parents just assumed he'd want them to pay. It's not 'overcoming the odds', it's overcoming the immaturity of his parents. Additionally, I feel that your use of ellipses instead of periods was unnecessary.

What a pair of selfish and materialistic pieces of scum and I am sure I will get ripped for that. I have been putting money back for my child's college fund now for four years and there's still seven years of public schooling left. Needless to say I am pleased with the progress so far. I could be driving a much nicer and newer model car or living a "fancier" life but I want to give my child a decent start and not leave college deep in debt. OP I feel for you.

Some parents think about themselves first

I've thought about jumping in with the ROTC, but am worried that Uncle Sam won't fully pay my tuition or will just flake out.

Yeah I have a friend who does ROTC and they now say that they can't pay for school anymore. In other words, don't do it.

Them saying the bullshit that ROTC doesn't pay for school is shit. They still pay for it. my sister is in ROTC and she didn't have to pay. I will be in ROTC and I won't have to pay. Please get your weird lies off of here

#159 It works differently for different people. Saying it's "shit" is an invalid statement. Just because it works for you doesn't mean it works for everybody.

you are an asshole and the rest of you who agree with him. you dont join the military just to have them pay for collage. its assholes like you who join for the wrong reasons and then when they finally become active duty in the military they spend there whole time bitching about how much they hate their job. you join the military for the right reasons or dont join at all!! to many men and woman have died protecting this country to have piece of craps wear the same respectable uniform because they just need the money. stay at home you whiney sob. hooah

Yeaaah they kind of keep it quiet, but the ROTC doesn't pay much for schooling anymore. So if you're talking a big expensive university, you might want to look more into scholarships and FAFSA.

At least, that's what my boyfriend told me, who is in the Air Force, and inquired into it on behalf of my nephew. My boyfriend still receives the benefit of having his schooling paid for, but it's a gigantic hassle and the VA has also completely jacked up his credit. After I think almost nine years, he only JUST managed to get it corrected so that we could get a house. I'm not trying to sway you one way or the other though, OP. I think it totally sucks that your parents are that selfish, and I wish you the best of luck in the future! And just because they didn't show you the acceptance letter now doesn't mean you won't ever be able to apply again, right?

How are you in ROTC your retarded I feel bad for any subordinates you have

People wonder why I often diss California all the time... it is FMLs like this. I know a number of reasonable people that live there, but they are like the milk in the Great Bowl of Granola.. having to float all the fruit(cake)s, nuts, and flakes.

Letting Uncle Sam handle your tuition really makes you sound like a winner...

He's got a plan, the drive to succeed, and the intelligence to get into two of his top college choices. I'd say he's well on his way.

A plan that involves our government paying for his schooling. Not something I'm too impressed with.

While he serves and protects your country and your rights? Yeah. Very unimpressive.

@ #133 It seams that you don't know what ROTC is... its Reserve Officer Training Corps, i.e. military service. They give scholarships as incentives. Uncle Sam paying in return for service is hardly a government hand out! Good for OP, you're obviously a cut above average! Best of luck to you!

Getting yelled at, put through the wringer, and treated like ass by a drill sergeant in order to prep me to get shot at by some sick bastard or another for three to six years seems like more than enough to pay for college. But if you disagree, feel free to try it first. Then if you still have the nerve to bash me for paying my way through any available means, go for it.

I respect your decision and think it's wonderful. I joined ROTC when i was younger, but couldn't hack the physical due to an old knee injury from when I was a kid. Good luck!

Quit being a dick. Best of luck to you OP I'm in AFJROTC now, and plan on enlisting.

#133 It's not free. He has to work for the tuition. It's very impressive considering the work that they end up doing. I wouldn't demoralize it because it makes you look very bad.

Nothing wrong with that. At least they have the balls to do so

Nothing wrong with that. At least OP has the balls to do so. I joined and fough overseas in both Afghanistan and Iraq. UNCLE Sam is paying my tuition. Anything wrong with that bud?,

133- so what you're saying is if you can't afford it or have a scholarship?
