well school only tests how well you can remember things not how smart you are.
He's probably autistic
Hacker culture ftw
I struggled a lot in school. I don't think I'm stupid. I think this sucks because he's obviously gifted with computers, and is not unintelligent. Somehow, the way the material is presented is difficult. He could also have a difficult time with exams. (My weakness was always papers.) I think if he were tested and there was a way found to present material in his learning style, he could thrive. Good luck to them.
Is your son Ferris Bueller?
Grades do not validate intelligence!
he is probably smart enough but just lazy or bored. I would think about seeing if the school has extra credit classes that would interest him. A lot of the time people who are very smart get bored in school because its not entertaining and they know they are smarter

You might want to look into private school or advanced placement classes, or something along those lines. I'm sure this sounds presumptuous, and I'm sorry for that in advance, but it sounds like his current school situation isn't challenging him enough.
I tend to agree with #1 on this one. I've known a lot of genius kids in my life. Most of them got horrible grades despite being smarter than anyone around them. A gifted program may be helpful in challenging your child and motivating them to do better.
