I was actually the same way in high school. It's not so much not being smart enough to keep up grades as much as being too bored by the piece of shit we call the United States public school. Get him some harder classes or more specified classes.
Grades have next to nothing to do with intelligence or talent.
Op remember this, school doesn't test smartness, it tests attentiveness. Your sone could be failing school but be the einstein of the 21st century!
I'm gonna guess the thing bringing his grades down is homework completion. Lots of extremely intelligent kids get bad grades simply because they don't want to do the busy work they're given. They ace all the tests but never turn anything else in
Did you miss the part where he was changing the grade on his midterm? Obviously he isn't acing his tests.
It's all motivation. Get him to not be so lazt
Im guessing he is smart enough if he can do that
Tbh it's not that hard to hack school computers. In 7th grade my and my friends hacked our schools computers and made it so when anybody logged on the vid 2 girls 1 cup would play and you couldn't shut it off unless you physically unplugged the computer. Lol good times
Intelligence and education are two very different things

You might want to look into private school or advanced placement classes, or something along those lines. I'm sure this sounds presumptuous, and I'm sorry for that in advance, but it sounds like his current school situation isn't challenging him enough.
I tend to agree with #1 on this one. I've known a lot of genius kids in my life. Most of them got horrible grades despite being smarter than anyone around them. A gifted program may be helpful in challenging your child and motivating them to do better.
