Today, my water pipes froze and burst and I now have to take snow from my back yard and boil it down into water in order to flush my toilet. FML

Kayla_BlowPop tells us more.

Hey, I'm the OP. My pipes burst at about 2:00 AM so I couldn't take water from neighbours or call a friend. We figured out they froze at like five PM and we were all trying to unfreeze them. At that point it was just the hot water that didn't work. It actually happened to us once already, and we fixed it so we didn't think it was a big deal until they burst. We called the plumber the next day and we had water by the time I woke up. It was just my little sister and I who were melting the snow, because we were the only ones who had to pee. We made a really big mess and my sister kept flushing the toilet before we actually had enough water, making us have to start all over again. It was a horrible experience and my older brother refused to help. But now, it's just a really funny story to tell.

It could be worse, you could have to boil down yellow snow to take a shower.

For the sake of one pee, I would've just peed in to something and tipped it outside somewhere (in to soil, grass or something down the back of the garden). But then I've been on plenty of far from luxury hikes and camping trips.. It's not pleasant but needs must! Glad you got it all sorted.

Why do you have to boil it? Melting it would be sufficient if you're just using it for toilet water. I won't even ask where the shit is going to go with burst pipes.

I believe just the fresh water pipes burst. The sewage pipes are usually empty, unless they are clogged, so no water to freeze and burst the pipe.

I boiled it in order to melt it. I don't know how else I could melt snow.

I think you mean that you heated it rather than boiled it. Boiling means bringing the already-melted snow (water) to where it starts making bubbles and releasing vapor.

#56, thanks for the good reply. I was going to delve into the distinctions between the latent heat of fusion vs vaporization. It would have been enlightening, but yours did the trick :D

You could always turn the water on, fill a bucket where the burst happened, (assuming its accessible) then turn it off again, save yourself a lot of effort and the toilet will most likely fill up in the process, twice as many flushes for the effort! :)

I'm guessing you don't live in Canada and have never been in this situation.

Actually, I have been in that situation and that's exactly what I did

Nope no FML. You have shown resourcedulness in a difficult situation. That is winning and your life will be at least some kind of succesful with thay kind of problem solving under your belt.

Did you have a friend you could stay with that has running water/power? If so you could have drained your pipes then stayed with them for a bit...but it looks like it's too late now about your pipes maybe you can stay with someone now...

been there done that!! good luck chum!

At least you have the possibilities of melting snow :) Stay positive and roll around in snow instead of these stupid warm water showers.
