Why? Because she's not the sharpest tool in the shed? Yeah, she messed up and was pretty gullible to do what she did, however that doesn't mean that OP should leave her. Maybe he should make that decision, not you.

It sounds a lot more serious to me than something that can be excused with "she's just not the sharpest tool in the shed". Now her son might not be able to go to college at all which could very well drastically change the course of his life in a very unwanted way.
