So? He's not obligated to let you go.
You're not immediate family. So stop whining and get back to work.
shut the **** up #58, just because a. your a total kiss ass or b. your not the favorite (I chose c. all of the above) doesn't mean you have to be a ******* douchebag. Its a ******* kid, I know you don't understand this because you have no friends, but imagine for a minute that you did.. if they had no family you'd be there for them if you weren't such a little bitch.
It is really annoying when managers pull that kind of thing. i gave my managers a month's WRITTEN notice that i was going on vacation this month for just a week. they told me not to worry and that they would cover my shifts for me. i still asked for coverage and got it from my co-workers. while i was away, two people didnt show up for two shifts of mine even though they told me they would cover for me. when i got back, i still got written up for not having coverage for those two days. so i feel your pain.

Why should your boss give you leave of absence for that? The idea itself seems ridiculous to me. I'd fire you just for even asking that if you'd work for me...
i didnt askmy boss to cover.i asked other coworkers. i work in a restaurant. i asked other hosts to cover for me. thats how it works when u need a day off. i cover for people all the time (the 1 day i dont work) myboss just said he would find coverage for me since im a good worker..then he writes me up. i dont get it
why do guys seem to think that their opinions define common sense? ugh I really want to see one of them pushing a baby through their rectum...after having painful intestinal contractions for 24 hours, on little or no sleep or food.
shhhhh.
I would like to see you shove a baby out of your rectum. That's a fairly illogical position to take really. Men are not designed to carry and birth a child, Women are. They are designed to handle the pain that this act causes, however this does not mean that the pain they suffer in general is considerably less and it takes more for them to feel pain in general. That is also a fairly absurd position (not that you were making that assertion, just a note). I like how allot of these types of things devolve into a 'well he is a man, therefore ebil!' 'he can't understand' 'i'd like to see him shove a baby out of his XYZ orifice' and on the same hand then claim sexism. It's like those commercials featuring the lovable but rabidly stupid man child husband who is made to look like an idiot, lazy, fat, etc while the wife is not. There is allot of sexism these days, it's just usually directed towards men. I am not claiming that women are bereft of this phenomena and that all men are kind, and treat women as equals... but it is far less skewed than most make it out to be. The bottom line is, we don't have enough information. The job could be something that the loss of one 'Cog' is too much and cannot be had. It could also not be. The boss could be male or female, we don't know. The boss could be a jerk, the boss could be under pressure from their boss(es) and if more people miss work without proper notice they get written up. They could have very archaic and draconic work policies, who knows. The end is, I find it passing strange that someone would say FML to this situation, considering this friend aparently is alone and has no family to be with them. Seems a bit off to me.
it's still not fair for these guys to type things that are disrespectful to this woman because she wanted to be there for her friend, who had no one else. it's also unfair that these guys are acting like the women giving birth who can't handle it or who need someone to be with them are just overreacting, and they're sick of women bitching about things like this, and getting special treatment while going through PAINFUL labor. and if they really cant handle it they shouldn't have kids. No, they don't understand, if they did they wouldn't type rude things like this. i was not talking about all men, i was responding to the guys who typed whatever i was responding to. and if a woman said the same thing i would also feel the same way about it. i shouldn't even have to say that as a disclaimer.

I'm really confused by half of these comments. She gave her boss advance notice that her friend would be having a baby. Hate to break it to you, but babies don't care much about our schedules, and will come out when they're ready. Due dates are a rough estimate, and very few people actually have their baby on the due date the doctor gave them. Maybe she should have kept her legs closed? There is no explanation as to the circumstances behind this birth. For all you know, she could be married, but her husband is deployed, so her best friend wants to be there for her. And nothing here says she can't handle parenthood. I know that if m husband weren't able to be there, I'd want my best friend with me. That doesn't mean I won't be a good parent. You guys are beyond ignorant and I pray to God you never have children. OP, yeah this does suck, but like #4 says, your boss isn't obligated to let you off. Sorry
So you leave anyway, take a day of absence. Vomit and claim you have swine flu. Start chewing off your arm, etc.
