Today, our company was being visited by one of our biggest clients, a rich Japanese businessman. My boss wanted to honour him by welcoming him while wearing a kimono in the reception area of our building. The client was in a suit and tie, and I don't think he'll be back. FML

The problem is your boss forgot to offer sushi and challenge the client to a katana duel. Great, I posted this twice. Thanks phone. Sorry, can't delete this. Just downvote it

The problem is your boss forgot to offer sushi and challenge the client to a katana duel. He was obviously offended by this.

I'm Japanese but many people have never even worn a kimono more or less own one. Their kind of like the cowboy costume of Japan. I'm sorry but if I saw your boss wearing that at a business meeting I would find that very insulting. But since you guys had no idea that suck! FYL OP?

you always wear whatever is tradition for the country you're having the meeting in. that's pretty common knowledge I thought.

I think it more depends on who is paying who :).

It's one thing to respect their culture, it's another to try to preform customs that you know nothing about.

I'm half-Japanese, and I can safely say that no one in Japan wears kimonos as casual or formal wear - we only wear kimonos for festivals and such. Your boss is a dick. That's like a Japanese person wearing a cowboy hat and boots, swinging a lasso around and yelling, "Yeee-haw!"

Marketing research goes a long way... Just sayin'

Of course he was in a suit and tie. That's what they wear even in Japan. AND I know the gesture was not lost on him. Don't worry.

That sucks, but on the bright side you have an awesome boss who knows how to have fun.

I'm sorry but that is the worst idea I ever heard
