There are some Nigerian princes and some lotteries she never entered out there that would love to make her some irresistible offers. Though I really wonder why the mother had keys to begin with. Maybe OP was a minor, and she had at least partial ownership over the car? In any case, it's a good lesson in the benefits of being exclusively responsible for your own property.
