Today, the couple I've been housesitting for returned. Apparently, I kept the place too clean, and they don't believe that I actually stayed here. They're refusing to pay me. FML

Just an excuse not to pay you. Sone people are really dicks.

Take a shit on their dining table and ask if it's enough proof to get paid.

**** what they thinks! If they can't prove it, they gotta pay you.

I wish I could be Messier too - the guy got to play with Gretzky

Pun fail... Messier isn't pronounced the way you said it.

A stupid reason not to pay you.

The exact same thing happened to me one time

Unfortunately this might be one of those situations where you just take a step back and reevaluate your relationship with these people. Now you know not to do this couple any favours... yes it sucks that you won't get paid... but this reminds me of something a teacher once told us in high school. "If you lend a friend $100 and never see them again... consider that $100 well spent" granted you didn't give them money but you did give them your time. tl; dr: **** them... now you know better than to help these people out in the future

I always leave the houses I house sit clean, even change the sheets I sleep in. Usually they are very thankful because that means they get to come home to a clean house and not have to clean up after someone.

We once came home to a sink full of coffee grounds and our sitter's dirty underwear in our couch cushions. Another friend did put clean sheets on the bed as we asked (he'd been crashing in the bed while we were away); he just didn't take the dirty ones off first (still no idea how he thought that worked). Coming home to a clean house would be amazing. Hell, just coming home to a house not noticeably worse than when we left would be several steps ahead of our usual. Did they have animals you were feeding, OP? If so, maybe if they are still refusing to pay you because you *didn't* mess up their house (which, really? **** your life) maybe you can at least get a partial payment out of them for ensuring their pets didn't die. However, if it was a large enough amount for you that you're not willing to lose it, then yeah, take them to court. You'll have to pay a fee to file it, but if you win, you can ask the judge to make them cover the court fees. Good luck with it; that is a bullshit complaint.

Wouldn't the house be dusty, though, if nobody was there for however long they were on vacation? I mean, if it's not dusty, that would signal to me that somebody's been cleaning it. They sound like idiots. If I came home after vacation to a super-clean house, I'd be thrilled.

Not really an expert here but if they refuse to pay then take them to small claims court and then use the router logs for accessed websites while they were away as evidence if you can.
